This is your only chance for substantive changes, including updating the chapter with a few key citations that have appeared since manuscript preparation. The copyeditor is very complementary of your work ("beautifully written" are her exact words), so there are not a lot of changes and this should not take a lot of time. I will be sending you the originals of the copyedited manuscript to review by mail. These include red-pencil mark-ups, blue-pencil typesetting directions and yellow query tags. We need you to answer any queries, verify that red-pencil changes made by the copy editor are okay, and make any modest changes you would like (particularly adding some recent key references). The query and red-pencil check should only take about a half hour for most chapters. I'll include directions about adding passages (ie, short discussion of key recent references) with the packet. We need these changes by the end of the first week in March, so we would need you to mail them back by the end of the month (or a little sooner for overseas authors). This is the main part of the proof process. The next proofing stage will be final hard copy proofs, and only typos will be changed at that point. Because you will be recieving the original copyedit proofs, we don't want them languishing in a mailbox while you are away, so we would like positive confirmation that you will be in and able to review them before we mail. So... PLEASE CONFIRM TO ME BY EMAIL TODAY OR TOMORROW THAT YOU WILL BE IN THE OFFICE AND ABLE TO REVIEW THE PROOFS BY FEB 28. I will also be calling each of you to confirm that we should mail your chapter. If we don't hear from you, or if you prefer, we will hold your chapter here and proof it for you. Again, this is our chance for you to review the wording of the chapter one last time, and to add a few sentences on crucial references that have emerged since it was written, for which Tom and I would be very grateful. Please let me know if you are in and able to review these proofs in the next two weeks. Cheers, Lee PS Kevin, Bart and Matt, we are copying you just in case Tom, Peck or Vera are travelling, but the proofs will go to first authors only, or to you if the first author is out of commission. Also, there are so few case study corrections that we are not planning to bother mailing out case studies. If you are a case study author and would like to review that proof as well, just let me know. --Lee
