As you may know the chief executive (John Lawton) reluctantly had to suspen spend on new thematic programmes pending the outcome of the revised CSR 2000 spending review. Originally it was thought that we would know the outcome by late October but dure to one political delay an another by OST the provisional outcome will not be known util the 22nd (Today 1030am). Notwithstanding the financial allocations to individual councils may not be known until Mid December. I will not know until December at the earliest whether PRESCIENT will still proceed but as far as we are concerned it will until we are informed otherwise. The worst case at the moment is that there is a delay..but as soon as we have an indication one way or the other then it is planned to launch the programme next Spring. I know this is frustrating but a letter at this stage will not help matters as all of the above is out of our direct control and rests with the aspirations of OST.If you want to discuss give me a ring and I can fill in the detail. I am out of the office today but will be in AM tomorrow. Best wishes Neville Dr Neville Hollingworth Earth Sciences Team NERC.
