I must admit though I am totally fed up with NERC. Any negative comment seems to be enough to damn our proposals, and all we get is a patronising letter telling us that we are a promising group etc etc but no money! On the bright side both Neil and I got EU grants, so we can still do some work. Just returned from a meeting in Slovenia to arrange the PINE project. We managed to steer it away from more short-term stuff towards producing longer isotope chronologies. We will be working with Hakkon Grudd, who seems very good, and should be able to get at least a 400 year chronology for Tornetrask, combining density and isotopes to get temperature and moisture stress. We should get the same for northern Finland and Northwest Norway. In Slovenia we might get 300 years if Spruce turns out to be okay. I am very keen on extending the chronologies now, with proper replication using latewood of individual trees so we can calculate confidence limits, and Neil has plans for new kit that I hope will increase our capacity by at least an order of magnitude, so maybe complete Holocene chronologies are not too far out of sight. I am of course very keen to collaborate, so lets discuss it. I am totally shagged today, having got back at 2.00 am in time to give a lecture at 10.00 this morning, so I may go home this afternoon. Anyway you can ring me anytime at work or at home. Home 01792 523850 work 01795 295845 With regard to the Holocene paper it would be good to get it sorted. The co-authors were moaning at me in Slovenia, so I blamed you, despite which they send best wishes! I want to let you know that I am very disappointed about this and genuinely did my best to try to get it through. This is not bullshit as I was anxious to really give this a chance. I am happy to show you my official submission on the project (in confidence) where I argued that the referee's ratings were too low and that this was an innovatory application. I would like to chat on the phone with you about this so can you give me a number and time to ring you. I am out this morning (any chance of an out of hours number?). I will also get the stuff on your Holocene paper to you next week - promise. I am genuinely disappointed about this but lets talk about a future application?
