He will be joined by the two trustees (Ms Susan Perry and Mr Colin Jenkins). He has agreed that his intended support for environmental sciences research may be announced at the Symposium. The VC will make the announcement just before the end of the session. Mr Jackson supported the Jackson Environment Institute at UCL from 1995. Mr Jackson intends to re-establish the JEI with ENV from this year. For the time being, it will still be referred to as the JEI. It is anticipated that it will have a core staff, and maintain a strong identity in the same way that CRU, CSERGE, CER do. The UEA Research and Business Development Office has been negotiating with the Jackson Foundation for the last two months over the precise details of the support, which have still to be finalised. However, it is anticipated that the support resulting from this arrangement will amount to around 5 million pounds over the initial five years of the agreement. Both parties anticipate that funding will continue well beyond this initial period. UEA will send out a brief press announcement on Thursday. A bigger, set-piece launch is planned for later in the year. The current Director of the JEI at UCL, Prof Martin Parry OBE - who works mainly in the area of climate change impacts - will join ENV. It is possible that one or two other existing JEI staff will also be joining us. I will email other ENV staff later this morning. I will arrange a meeting within the next week or so, to give us all the opportunity of discussing JEI joining ENV PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL UNTIL FRIDAY Trevor ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Professor Trevor D.
