date: Wed Sep 15 09:33:28 2004 from: Phil Jones subject: Re: Gridded DTR files to: "David Wuertz" , Russell Vose Dave, To clarify, there are two potential papers: 1. The mean temperature comparisons of GHCN/CRU/NASA that you or Russ sent me some time ago. This would make a nice contribution to GRL, showing that there is hardly any difference between the 3 land analyses. One of you gave Dave Easterling some plots for the SH, NH, globe and also for Australia. Russ had some text. If this can be expanded on and completed/submitted it can be referred to by IPCC - and maybe keep the skeptics quiet for a few days. 2. I'm hoping the DTR dataset can be compared to the ERA-40 reanalyses over the period 1958-2001. The mean temperature comparisons have been compared (with the CRU data) - see The ERA-40 Project Report on the ERA-40/NCEP/CRU comparisons has been published on our website: <[1]http://www.ecmwf.int/publications/library/do/references/list/192> It is report # 18. A paper has almost been accepted on this by JGR. I will forward your email to Adrian Simmons at ECMWF to show him the coverage. I'll see if he has time to do something soon, or wants to wait for the newer version, which Russ says will have more stations in some regions. Ideally what we'd like is the gridded 5 by 5 deg file for comparisons. I'll email you once I've got a reply from Adrian, about when he can do something. I'm away much of the next 6 weeks at a series of meetings, so responses might be slow. You seem to be in a bad way, with water problems and Ivan on the way. Hope you get through it all without too much hassle. Meanwhile Russ is down the pub and doing London and brushing up on the Bard. To even things up, Dave, London generally does the visitors and Shakespeare probably didn't write all the plays ! Cheers Phil At 19:34 14/09/2004, David Wuertz wrote: Russ & Phil, I'm a bit confused. We have only used mean temperature for the GHCN/CRU comparison, so no DTR. However, I did find some DTR analysis I did last October 22-24. I've attached several related graphics files. [Russ, I found these on Argus in ~dwuertz/projects/max_min/adjusted/prelim. This analysis used a preliminary version of the recently updated GHCN max/min data set (I believe), and adjustments made by the recent Menne/Williams method (I believe).] Are these the results Phil is interested in? If so, I can probably locate the ASCII data that correspond to the attached maps of DTR trends. I will send those in a subsequent email after while if I do not hear from you, just in case this is what you want. If I'm sending you the wrong stuff, please let me know along with more detail next time, and hopefully I'll get it right. I see that it's pub time there, so I may not hear from you until morning.
