I think the idea of a coordinator is a very good idea - certainly themes need this kind of support. However this need is probably not constant over time, so would it be better to have coordinators that "floated" between themes? Secondly, I think that the arrangement with Andrew and Neil as unpaid theme managers works well because they are completely "sold" on Tyndall, they have offices in the same building as HQ, and their own research aims are closely allied to that of the themes. I am not sure that we will necessarily be able to find two such people for all 4 themes ... so I feel it might be difficult to stick absolutely to the ideal of having two unpaid theme managers in established long term academic positions. Perhaps we could compromise and have 1 paid position and one unpaid position ...although this creates inequity. I am still thinking about potential theme 1 managers ... no conclusions yet. However, this is where I have got so far ... Possibly Tim Lenton, although he'll be new here, he is leader of GENIE, I don't know if he will stay leader of GENIE when he moves here. However, I really don't know him that well. Rumour has it that he's a strong supporter of GAIA theory so I am not quite sure what that might imply, if anything. I don't know what research agenda he'll want to pursue when he gets here. But as he will be here soon that will become apparent! I wonder if there could be an argument for finding an economist ... if Jonathan doesn't stay as theme manager, we wouldn't have an economist on the theme 1 team.....
