Please find attached a slightly modified version of my comments on the mss - see especially page 13 on the overlap issue. I haven't had time to check specifics about how many of the Vaganov et al ring width series used in MBH98 were from sites also in the Schweingruber network - my guess is that almost all are. Still only 19 of the ITRDB density series used in MBH98 were Schweingruber data (the other three were two from me and one from Cleaveland). Only these 19 passed our quality control).A precise number on co-location of Russian records in the two datasets could be checked by comparing geogrpahic coordinates along with the VSM 96 book, which is where the ring width index data came from. We definitely did not use density data from those Russian sites, only ring width. Now I'm really headed out of town.
