date: Wed Oct 23 14:12:35 2002 from: Mike Hulme subject: Royal Society/Wolfson Merit Award to: tyn.all Dear All, We (UEA, ENV, Tyndall and John Schellnhuber) have been successful in our application to the Royal Society for a Special Merit Award for John Schellnhuber from the scheme operated by the Royal Society and Wolfson Foundation to attract outstanding scientists (back) to the UK. This is a prestiguous award and is indicative of John's standing internationally and in the UK. Very few, if any, such awards have been made in the area of environmental science. The Award is worth £260,000 over 5 years and as well as providing an incentive contribution to John's salary it also contributes to some associated research expenses (in this case Dr Jurgen Kropp and Franziska Matthies will be beneficiaries). This will help to release a little more Tyndall money for Round 3 projects. Simon - it would be worth seeing whether Mary is thinking of a media release about this. Mike
