Mike --- DRAFT 31 October 2002 New UEA Professor awarded top science honour A new Professor at the University of East Anglia has been awarded one of UK science's top honours - a Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award. Professor John Schellnhuber, who joined UEA in October, receives the award for his research in the field of integration science, which examines how very complex problems need solutions involving input from many disciplines. Professor Schellnhuber's, who is Research Director at the Tyndall Centre, is applying these research methods to the complex problem of climate change. "This is one of the first Research Merit Awards to be made in the field of environmental sciences and we're delighted that Professor Schellnhuber's contribution has been recognised in this way," said Professor Mike Hulme, Executive Director of the Tyndall Centre. The award, which is worth around £250,000 over five years, will be used by Professor Schellnhuber to develop a general model that can be used to answer specific questions about climate change and society. Professor Schellnhuber joined UEA from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, where he was a founding Director. Research Merit Awards are made jointly by the Royal Society and the Wolfson Foundation as a means of attracting the very best scientists to work in the UK.
