cc: "Solomon, Susan" date: Wed May 5 09:48:40 2004 from: Phil Jones subject: Re: GCOS Imp. Plan to: Kevin Trenberth Kevin, May 19-20 not on as I'll be in Bologna at an EU meeting. I'll be thinking over the next few weeks if there are meetings I shouldn't be going to in the autumn and also trying to reduce my commitments ( was already trying, but with little success). Now Director here since Jean left to be the TSU Head of WGII, but my new support person won't be in place till the autumn. Geneva may be the best opportunity - let's think about that and decide over the next couple of weeks. We do have a challenge ! I know most of the LAs and they come on good recommendations from NCDC in a few cases. There is a good regional balance. Agree on the initial tasks. From the other email you'll see I'm trying to encourage a rebuttal of an awful paper. Also, some work with Adrian Simmons should finally bury Cai and Kalnay - but I've still to fully convince Adrain to write it up beyond an ECMWF report. I decided not to attend the Exeter mtg on vertical T sructure and I have declined authorship in the US assessment; I am so overloaded. Yes I have received the GCOS invite and I am wondering whether or not to go. I had thought about CLIVAR but you won't be there. I am in UK giving the Symonds lecture on May 19: I'll be there for several days: going to Reading on 20th. Will you attend any of that? If Geneva is the best opportunity then maybe we should accept that? I have to say that we have a challenge ahead of us. The challenge is indicated to me by the fact that I don't know several of the Lead Authors. Half seem to be from developing countries. I am hoping Susan can send to us copies of their vita. At present I have only sketchy notes even on the names. I'll cc Susan. So our initial task is to divide up the chapter and make assignments for the Sept mtg. Kevin Phil Jones wrote: Kevin, Did you get an invite to another meeting in Geneva Aug 16-19 on this? With IPCC coming up and us two leading the atmos. obs. chapter are you going? It might be an opportunity to meet, but I'm not sure I want to spend another week in Geneva. Was there 2 weeks ago with AOPC and we went through it again !! Anyway thoughts appreciated, but we will need to discuss some things before the first meeting in late Sept. I'm not going to CLIVAR in Baltimore, but I could come to the HC meeting in mid-Sept which Peter Thorne has just sent invites around.
