I was fascinated by this e-mail and the fact that I was not included on the cc list. I quote ffrom that e-mail: You may recall that there was discussion in Geneva about the > possibility of > providing a set of climate change scenarios based on the SRES > emissions > scenarios for different regions of the world. My sense was that there > was > some interest in obtaining these as guidance for preparing your > chapters. > > A small team comprising Filippo Giorgi (WG I), Mike Hulme (WG I/II), > Murari > Lal (WG I/II), Richard Jones (WG I), Peter Whetton (WG I) and myself, > are > currently finalising the methods used to develop scenarios. If you are finalizing methods, and I am supposed to be writing about scenarios in Chapter 3, shouldn't I be informed of this? >One > critical > question concerns the regionalisation we employ. Currently, we are > working > with a template used in previous meteorological analysis by Filippo. I > presented these regions as a map in Geneva. I attach the map as a pdf > file > And further down: > (2) Will you work with scenarios for your region if they are provided > to > you at the May CLA meeting in USA? And what does ``work with'' mean? And finally Barry's response at the end: > [Barrie Pittock] Again, sorry to be so negative, but that is how it > is, in my view. There is so much more to be done, and we should not go > off half-cocked. > > Best regards to all, > > Barrie Pittock. Tell me, given that I am supposed to be writing the section on scenarios in YOUR chapter 3 and and am the co-convening lead author on scenarios in WGI, wouldn't it have made sense to copy me on this e-mail?????? To not do so further underlines my concern about how you are insisting on having people use these scenarios for more than just guidance, regardless of various objections raised. Since you well know my attitude toward this, it seems somewhat suspect to leave me out of the loop. I remain very concerned by your continued efforts in this direction. This is clearly an issue that should be addressed by the TGCIA, which Group seems to continue to wane on the sidelines. Perhaps this waining is also convenient from your point of view. (And how was the list of people who are going to be ''forming the scenarios'' chosen? When I talked to Filippo Giorgi in early March, he didn't seem to think that that was what he was engaged in.) You may argue that I am in some way misconstruing what you are planning, But given how many times we went around about this issue in Geneva, and the degree to which our positions differ, I can't help but interpret your failure to copy me on the e-mail as deliberate. At the very least it was a misleading oversight. I would prefer that we establish an atmosphere of mutual trust, if at all possible. Keeping each other (or all three of us, Mike) apprised of what scenario plans are being developed would be a good start. The meeting in May in Washington should prove to be very interesting. Regards, Linda P. S. I wll be sending you material on Climatic Change scenarios. But this will be rough. It really doesn't make much sense to do soemthing elaborate at this point given the ridiculous reverse time lag between WGII and I. I trust you will make this clear in your comments about the draft before you send it out. -- ****************************************************************************** Dr. Linda O.
